RE Collins radio 30L-1 linear power amplifier HF SSB MINT for KWM-2A S-line HAM. Up for sale is a round emblem 30L-1 HF linear amplifier made by Collins (now Rockwell-Collins). It is a late-model RE with serial number 5772. It comes from an estate sale. It has always been stored in a dry, non-smoking, no pet environment. The unit for sale here is in excellent condition. Please check the detailed photos for the details. According to the widow the unit worked up to the moment when it was stored about 15 years ago. It hasnt been used since, not by me either. So when you power it up, I recommend you do this through a slow ramp-up of the AC input voltage, preferably using a variac transformer. Another option is to put an incandescent 100-watt light bulb in series with it and then turning it on for half an hour, this gives the internal capacitors a chance to reform. The unit is currently wired for 120V AC but it also can be wired for 240V AC, in case your 120V circuits do not have a heavy enough circuit breaker. The front of the amplifier is pristine with clear lettering and perfect paint. The cage has minor scuffs but nothing serious. The inside looks exceptionally clean.

There is only little dust inside, also the fan is free from dust. Also, the 811 tubes look very clear.

There is absolutely NO corrosion. The amplifier probably has not seen much usage during it active years.

The N connector (RF output) and CINCH connector (RF input) have been replaced by high quality, Teflon insulated SO239 connectors. It looks like a very professional job, it might have been done by Collins itself. It can easily be undone if you wanted to. All switches and controls operate freely but firm, without any looseness. The Collins 30L-1 RF amplifier covers almost the complete shortwave from 3.4 to 30MHz in 5 selectable bands (3.5, 7, 14, 21 and 28 MHz). The only part not covered is 5.0 to 6.5MHz, so all the WARC bands are covered as well. It puts out 800 watts PEP with ease. 800W is less than 3dB from the legal limit, half an s-unit on the other guys/gals S-meter.
So this amplifier is not just a collectors item, it can still be used today with a whole range of 100 watt transceivers. Maximum RF input power is 100 watts. The amplifier is very forgiving against user errors due to the use of four robust 811A directly heated triodes in parallel. Not only can these tubes take occasional abuse, they are also not very expensive when you would have to replace them.

Which is in sharp contrast with ceramic triodes; those are easily damaged when overdriving them. Not to mention the fact that ceramic tubes cost almost a thousand dollars to replace. Not so with the 811A tubes that this 30L-1 amplifier uses.

Another advantage of direct-heated triodes like the 811A is that they are instantly ready for use after amplifier switch-on, there is no wait time like with ceramic tubes. So you wont miss out on that rare DX station that suddenly popped-up from the noise. To summarize: An excellent example of the famous Collins 30L-1 amplifier, and a late round-emblem model.

A great complement to your Collins collection, or use it as a solid amplifier behind any ham radio. Dont let it slip away now, pounce while it is still here!
