HF power amplifier linear SSB RF Viewstar PT-1000A Eimac 3-500Z AEA LA-30 HAM. This is the Viewstar PT-1000A HF SSB amplifier. It uses a single Eimac 3-500Z thoriated tungsten power triode in grounded-grid operation. The amplifier is rated for 700 to 800 watts output, when driven with about 80 watts. It has a tuned input network per ham band (so no ineffective swamping resistor used on this one). The power supply is integrated in the same case. It can run on 127V or 240V. The amplifier came from an estate. The previous owner has partially taken it apart, but then halted his actions. I have no idea why he did this. The good news is that all parts still appear to be present (see photos). The only thing that I could find that is not present appear to be the case screws, but there might be more, please check all photos carefully. The amplifier has a high quality of build. It is cosmetically in excellent shape (a bit dusty is all), so when you re-assemble this, you will have an excellent, high-quality RF amplifier.
The amplifier is built around the Eimac 3-500Z power triode. This is an extremely robust tube, very tolerant of operator error and because of the direct filament cathode, it will be ready for use instantaneously once switched on (there is no wait time like you have with ceramic tubes).
The 3-500Z tube in this amplifier appears to be in excellent condition. The glass chimney is still present. We tested continuity for the filaments (it is there) and we tested for possible shorts between the electrodes (cathode, grid and plate). There are none, no shorts. The tube appears to have seen only light duty, judging from the absence of internal blackening. I have taken an extra photo of the tube while it was outside the unit.The Viewstar PT-1000A amplifier is identical to the (better known) AEA LA-30 amplifier, as well as the Vectronics HF-600 amplifier. We will include the Viewstar manual for this amplifier with the sale (as a PDF on CD), but you can also find it yourself on the Internet (on BAMA, Boar Anchor Manual Archive).
On the CD we also will include the AEA LA-30 manual, which includes the schematic diagram for this amplifier (but this also can be found on the web). So, you should have no troubles putting it together again. But like I said, it appears to be in very good condition and all parts appear to be included, so once you get it going you will have an excellent HF amplifier. A word of caution: the HT voltages present in this unit are lethal.
Do not work on this if you have no experience with this kind of equipment. Take every thinkable precaution when working on this (rubber gloves; keeping one hand in your pocket at all times; waiting for HT capacitors to bleed and so on).
